Katrina Quilt on display at Residence Life

The quilt was the idea of Gilbert and Harrington Hall complexes. They sold quilt squares for $2 each on which the buyer could write a message to Katrina’s victims. They sold 97 squares, and Iveta Ziegelbauer, a Residence Life complex coordinator, sewed the patches together.

UD students have written in a letter to Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, whose state suffered enormously from Hurricane Katrina. The letter will accompany the handmade patchwork quilt, with each patch bearing a message to the victims of Katrina that will be sent to Mississippi on behalf of the UD community.

UD Faculty's Auction!

An online benefit auction for Dillard University was set up by English Professor Ben Yagoda with help from the Office of Public Relations. The auction provides the opportunity to bid on unusual and unique items donated by the University of Delaware faculty. The auction deadline has been extended until December 2nd- this Friday! Pumpkin Carving to raise $ for Katrina

UD’s Art Conservation Club, made up of 50 undergraduate art conservation majors, hosted a pumpkin-carving contest on Sunday, Oct. 30.

All proceeds were donated by the club to historic preservation in New Orleans because alum Lenora Costa, AS ’05, lives near the French Quarter in New Orleans and reported on the needs there.

Softball Tourney raised fund for Katrina!

UD’s Panhellenic Conference and the Interfraternity Council (IFC) held their first annual Greek softball tournament, “Pitch-in for Katrina,” on Sunday, Oct. 23, to raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Eight sororities and six fraternities participated in the event and raised more than $1,500 for the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Katrina Fund.

UD Volleyballs raises fund during its season

Kappa Alpha Theta sorority raised $1,276.30 for Hurricane Katrina. How? By doing a fund-raiser at Main Street's popular Lettuc Feed You. 20% of proceeds from the days sales went to help out the victims.

Wave of Relief: Higher Ground Concert Series

Local Delaware musicians and local venues have been joining together to reach out to the Hurricane victims. Wave of Relief: Higher Ground Concert Series began September 17 and will last until October 28. The series includes more than 30 local bands and will take place and the familiar Main Street bars and restaurants. The concert series is hoping to raise between $15,000 and $20,000 and are well on their way with already (as of last Tuesday 10-4-05) $7,600 after only three shows!

Stay involved with helping out the Hurricane victims by going to these concerts and supporting the cause. This Friday, the Deer Park Tavern will host a concert with give-a-ways and raffles to keep the night going.

Save the date for the final jam at the East End Cafe on October 28th.

A Capella Benefit Concert Success

All five of the University's A Capella groups united on 10-5-05(previous post) for a Benefit Concert for Hurricane Katrina. The concert was sponsored by Phi Sigma Phi and the D Sharps# and included the D Sharps, Golden Blues, Deltones, Y-Chromes, and Vocal Point. A crown of about 200 students attended and a great time was had by all. The concert was put on because, even though the Hurricane was 5 weeks ago, we still need to remember the victims. The money at the concert was raised by either donations or raffle and was given to Teach for America foundation, which helps schools throughout the country in low-income areas with inadequate funding.

One of the great points in the night was when there was an announcement that there was a surprise from all all the groups. For the first time in the University of Delaware's history all five a capella groups came together and sang. This joining together truely signifies how U of D students have truely joined efforts to help the victims. Well done!

Benefit Concert set 10-5-05

A benefit concert is set for October 5, 2005 to help Hurricane Katrina victims. The concert will take place in the Scrounge which is in the Perkin's Student Center at 8 p.m. The concert will feature differnt A Capella groups from campus including the Deltones, D Sharps, Golden Blues, Vocal Point, and the Y Chromes. Go out and support Hurricane Katrina while listening to great music from your peers!

UD Chorale Recording benefits Hurricane Katrina

Efforts at this point are coming from everywhere in town and on campus. Publisher Barbara Harlow had ideas of producing sheet music on a song about Hurricane Katrina and turned to the UD Chorale for help. All the proceeds from the music will benefit Katrina directly. Sorority raises over $8,000 to help with Katrina aid

Members of Alpha Xi Delta sorority, along with eleven Newark restaurants raised over $8,000 to help the Katrina victims. On 9-15-05 "A Night Out in Newark" was proposed and clearly was a huge success. Along with the eleven restaurants on Main Street, Alpha Xi Delta Sorority raised money through bake sales at Giving on the Green, and a kiosk at Trabant University Center. This event truely was a community effort to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina!

Newark Community Day helps Katrina victims

This past weekend, Newark had its 34th annual Community Day where locals came to hear music, shop around, and enjoy great food on the Green of UD. There, raffles were going on, as well as food donations being taken. The Food Bank of Delaware and American Red Cross volunteers kicked off their "Hunger Drive 2005" by accepting food donations. Also, the city of Newark had already pledged $5000 to the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, but was accepting cash donations to aid in the relief. It was a beautiful day and fun was had by all who attended, while also remembering those who are in need and affected by the hurricane.

Success Stories of Helping the victims of Hurricane Katrina!

Around town and the University things are going great with raising money for Hurricane Katrina as well as other forms of relief.

The vigil was a huge success and featured a representative from all the different ministries on campus. The Deltones, a music group, did a beautiful job at singing the National Anthem and a few songs, as well as a solo from Hillary Booker. Many students and even local residents (over 300 people total) showed their support on the North Mall near Memorial Hall on Monday night.

Giving on the Green raised over $8,600! Check out how the UD students came together with the goal of bringing hope and assistance to those devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The green ribbon on in a ribbon garden on the South Green of Memorial Hall near Morris Library.

94 Countries offer aid as does the University of Delaware.

Hurricane Katrina's aftermath is leading to many helping out in relief efforts to help the victims. So far, 94 countires and international organizations have offered aid and assistance to those affected by this horrible tragedy. Germany, Italy, Spain and Canada are among the many who have offered to send various forms of emergency relief supplies. What has the University of Delaware done so far? Don't think that we are far behind, as many organizations around campus are offering support and planning events to benefit the hurricane victims.

The University students and administration are quickly responding to the people who are victims of Hurricane Katrina. This past weekend showed locals and students supporting the relief. At Grottos Pizza on Main Street the bartenders decided to donate 100% of their tips to the hurricane. Also, students are taking it upon themselves to donate as much as possible while still enjoying themselves. A party on West Main Street raised $350.00 and was a huge success. This week the Universtiy is showing its support. Tonight, 9/12/05, the University is holding a vigil service on the North Mall (Memorial Hall) and all are encouraged to attend. Also, on Tuesday, 9/13/05 Alpha Phi Sorority and Sigma Chi Fraternity are sponsoring a blood drive for the Hurricane Victims. Things are really starting to get going with various organizations around campus, which is great! Tonight, Project Sunshine is making crafts for children that are victims of Hurricane Katrina. Also, on Thursday, 9/15/05 all day selected restaurants on Main Street will be donating a percentage of their proceeds to Hurricane Katrina. Amoung to popular restaurants are Kate's, Shaggy's, Grotto's, Home Grown, Coldstone, Korner Diner, Newark Deli and Bagel, and Cafe Gelato. This event is being made possible by the sisters of Alpha Xi Delta and the restaurants on Main Street.

Another great way to get involved is to take part in Giving on the Green which is being put together by Office of Campus LIfe, Residence Life and is inspiring friendly compeition between groups on campus while rasing money for Katrina. Also, various raffles are taking place that will end this Friday, 9/16/05, the same day as Giving on the Green. From this event, green ribbons will be placed and hung on the south side of Memorial Hall.
